How long does clothing production take? A realistic timeline

Hoe lang duurt kledingproductie? Een realistisch tijdspad

One of the most underestimated aspects of clothing production is the time it takes. From the initial conversation to the delivered order: expect three to six months. If you don't plan for this, you will face delays. This is what the timeline looks like for each phase.

Phase 1: Intake and production consultation (1 to 2 weeks)

Everything starts with a conversation. You bring your idea, references, and material preferences. The clothing producer assesses feasibility, provides feedback on the design, and creates an initial schedule.

At Atelier Jungles, we do this through a production consultation costing €220. After that session, you will know what to expect in terms of costs, lead time, and next steps. You can read more about how to choose the right clothing producer for this conversation in our article what to look for in a clothing producer.

Phase 2: Pattern and first sample (3 to 6 weeks)

Based on the approved design, a pattern is made and a first sample is produced. This is the phase that takes the most time and where most delays occur, often because designs are adjusted or materials are out of stock.

Local clothing production helps here: you can be present at the sample, provide feedback directly, and implement corrections quickly.

Phase 3: Sample rounds and approval (2 to 6 weeks)

Almost always, multiple sample rounds are needed. Expect one to three rounds before a product is ready for production. You can read everything about how a sample process works in our article how a sample process works.

Phase 4: Tech pack and production order (1 to 2 weeks)

Once the sample is approved, the tech pack is finalized and the production order is confirmed. You can read more about what a tech pack is and who prepares it in our article what a tech pack is and whether you need one.

Phase 5: Production (2 to 6 weeks)

The actual production takes two to six weeks, depending on the complexity and size of the order. Small batches generally go faster than large orders. With local clothing production, you can more easily make adjustments if something is not right. You can read more about the difference between small batches and large orders in our article small batch vs bulk production.

Phase 6: Quality control and delivery (1 week)

Before delivery, the production is checked for quality. Deviations are assessed and corrected if necessary. Then delivery or pickup follows.

Total overview

Production 2 to 6 weeks
Quality control and delivery 1 week
Total 3 to 6 months

What determines whether it is on the short or long side?

The timeline varies by situation. Factors that speed up the process: a sharp and well-documented design, quick decisions during sample rounds, materials that are immediately available, and a clothing producer with capacity at the desired time.

Factors that cause delays: many design changes during the sample phase, materials that need to be ordered, a full production schedule, or unclear feedback. Common mistakes that cause delays can be read in our article common mistakes in clothing production.

Local vs. abroad: effect on lead time

Clothing production in the Netherlands is generally faster than abroad, not only in the production itself but also in communication. Questions are answered the same day. Adjustments are processed quickly. You can read more about the difference on our page clothing production Netherlands vs. abroad.

Frequently asked questions

Can it be faster than three months?

In exceptional cases, yes, but it is rarely wise for a first production. The sample phase takes time, and rushing often leads to mistakes that will cost you later.

How can I speed up the process?

Ensure a sharp design at the start, provide quick and concrete feedback during sample rounds, and confirm decisions in writing to avoid misunderstandings.

What if my deadline is tight?

Discuss this in the initial conversation. A clothing producer can then assess whether the schedule is feasible and where time can potentially be saved.

Does this timeline also apply to reorders?

Reorders go much faster. The sample has already been approved, and the tech pack is ready. Expect two to four weeks of production time for a reorder, depending on the order size and availability.
