What is a tech pack and do you need one?
When you start with clothing production, you will quickly come across the term tech pack. Many clothing producers ask for it. But what exactly is it, when do you need it, and do you have to provide it yourself? The latter is not the case at Atelier Jungles. This is what you need to know.
What is a tech pack?
A tech pack, also known as a technical package or production specification, is a document containing all the technical information that a clothing producer needs to consistently produce your product. It is the translation of your design into production instructions.
A complete tech pack typically includes:
- Technical drawings of the front and back
- Size chart with all measurements per size
- Material specifications: type of fabric, weight, color code
- Seam and finishing instructions
- Label and packaging information
- Color representation and any print or embroidery specifications
Why is a tech pack important?
Without a tech pack, a clothing producer works based on interpretation. This leads to deviations that you only see once production has already started. A tech pack prevents that: all specifications are fixed and can be reused for every order.
For reorders, a tech pack is indispensable. Your clothing producer already has all the information and can get started immediately without going through the sample phase again.
Do you need to provide a tech pack to start at Atelier Jungles?
No. At Atelier Jungles, you do not need to provide a tech pack to begin. We create it together with you as part of the production process, after the sample phase. A sketch, reference images, and a description of your product are sufficient to start the first conversation.
In the production consultation (€220), we discuss your design, material choice, and production plan. Everything needed for the tech pack is built up step by step during that process. You do not need any technical knowledge for this and do not need to hire a separate party. It is not a standalone package; it is part of how we work.
When is the tech pack created?
After the sample phase. At that point, all the details of the product are known: the fit is approved, the material choice is fixed, and the finishing is determined. Everything needed for the tech pack is already there, and we document it together. You can read more about the sample phase in our article how a sample process works.
What if you already have a tech pack?
If you already have experience with clothing production or are working with a designer who creates tech packs, you can bring that document to the first meeting. We will assess whether it is complete and usable and will supplement it where necessary.
Tech pack and foreign clothing production
At large foreign factories, a complete tech pack is usually required before they want to work with you. This is one of the barriers for starters who want to begin small. At smaller Dutch clothing producers like Atelier Jungles, this is more flexible: you start without a tech pack and build it up during the process.
You can read more about the difference between local and foreign clothing production on our page clothing production Netherlands vs. abroad.
Ready to get started?
You do not need a tech pack to start the conversation. Get in touch and tell us what you want to make. Then we will discuss together what the first step is.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to have a tech pack made before I approach Atelier Jungles?
No. We create the tech pack together with you as part of the production process. You do not need any technical knowledge for this and do not need to hire a separate party.
What does it cost to create a tech pack at Atelier Jungles?
Creating the tech pack is part of the production process and is not charged separately. The production consultation (€220) is the first step, after which you build the tech pack during the sample phase.
Can I use the same tech pack with another clothing producer?
In principle, yes. A well-prepared tech pack is transferable and forms the basis for every subsequent order, even with another clothing producer.
How detailed should a tech pack be?
Detailed enough that there is no room for interpretation. Every aspect that affects the final product must be included. You can read more about how to avoid mistakes in our article common mistakes in clothing production.
