Starting a clothing brand without experience? It is certainly possible — but only if you know which steps are truly important. In this guide, you will learn the 7 essential components that almost all successful starting brands begin with.
1. You don’t need to be a designer — but you do need to have a vision
You don’t need to be able to draw, make patterns, or design technically to start a clothing brand. What you do need is a clear concept: for whom are you making clothing, and why?
- What style do you envision?
- What problems or needs does your target audience have?
- What makes your brand different from existing labels?
Want to get started with this? Then read: defining brand story and concept.
2. Start small: 1–3 styles is enough for your first drop
Many starting brands aim too high. You don’t need a 12-piece collection — three strong items are often more effective than a whole range.
- Less risk and inventory
- Faster feedback collection from your target audience
- Lower development costs
Read more about this in our guide on collection building.
3. Samples and patterns determine 80% of your success
A piece of clothing is only as good as the pattern. Without a good fit, even the most beautiful idea will fail.
- Always have at least one sample made
- Do a fitting with models or friends
- Plan space for a second sample
More explanation: having samples made.
4. Know what clothing production really costs
Most starters underestimate the costs of a clothing line. You have to deal with:
- Patterns & technical development
- Samples (1–3 rounds)
- Production (MOQ 25–50 pieces per style)
- Labels, packaging & branding
- Photoshoot & marketing

5. Low MOQ is possible — but only with a good workshop
In the Netherlands, you can have clothing made with low MOQ (25–50 pieces). This is ideal for testing a brand. But low quantities require a workshop that is flexible and thinks along with you.

6. Choose materials that fit your price and target audience
The fabric determines 50% of the final result. Consider in advance:
- Organic cotton vs. conventional cotton
- Recycled polyester or deadstock fabrics
- Quality, weight, and durability

7. Start with a workshop that thinks along (not just executes)
A good workshop helps you with fit, materials, planning, and realistic costs. Especially if you have no experience, guidance is super important.
