Starting a clothing brand without experience – 7 things you need to know

Starting a clothing brand without experience? That is certainly possible — but only if you know which steps are truly important. In this guide, you will learn the 7 essential components that almost all successful starting brands begin with.

1. You don’t need to be a designer — but you do need to have a vision

You don’t need to be able to draw, make patterns, or design technically to start a clothing brand. What you do need is a clear concept: for whom are you making clothing, and why?

  • What style do you envision?
  • What problems or needs does your target audience have?
  • What makes your brand different from existing labels?

Want to get started with this? Read: defining brand story and concept.

2. Start small: 1–3 styles is enough for your first drop

Many starting brands begin too large. You don’t need a 12-piece collection — three strong items are often more effective than a whole range.

  • Less risk and inventory
  • Faster feedback collection from your target audience
  • Lower development costs

You can read more about this in our guide on collection development.

3. Samples and patterns determine 80% of your success

A garment is only as good as the pattern. Without a good fit, even the best idea will fail.

  • Always have at least one sample made
  • Do a fitting with models or friends
  • Plan space for a second sample

More explanation: having samples made.

4. Know what clothing production really costs

Most beginners underestimate the costs of a clothing line. You have to deal with:

  • Patterns & technical development
  • Samples (1–3 rounds)
  • Production (MOQ 25–50 pieces per style)
  • Labels, packaging & branding
  • Photoshoot & marketing

5. Low MOQ is possible — but only with a good workshop

In the Netherlands, you can have clothing made with low MOQ (25–50 pieces). This is ideal for testing a brand. But low quantities require a workshop that is flexible and thinks along with you.

6. Choose materials that fit your price and target audience

The fabric determines 50% of the final result. Consider in advance:

  • Organic cotton vs. conventional cotton
  • Recycled polyester or deadstock fabrics
  • Quality, weight, and sustainability

7. Start with a studio that thinks along (not just executes)

A good studio helps you with fit, materials, planning, and realistic costs. Especially if you have no experience, guidance is super important.

What you don’t need to have yet

Not everything needs to be in order before you start. You can postpone this:

  • A perfect logo and corporate identity. A strong product with a temporary appearance always sells better than a weak product in a nice package.
  • A fully developed webshop. First, validate whether people want to buy it.
  • A tech pack. You create this during the production process. You don’t have to be able to make it yourself. More in our article what is a tech pack and do you need one.
  • A large first order. Start small. Better to sell out 30 pieces than to have 300 pieces left unsold.

Local production in the Netherlands: a fair picture

Producing in the Netherlands is more expensive than in Asia or Eastern Europe. But for a startup brand, there are concrete advantages. You can order smaller quantities, communicate in the same time zone, be present at your sample, and build a relationship with a clothing manufacturer who knows your brand.

A clothing manufacturer who knows you will think along with you. They will call if something is wrong with your technical drawing, instead of just producing it and sending you the invoice. For an initial collection where quality is just as important as delivery, that is very valuable.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much money do I need to start a clothing brand? +

A realistic starting budget for a first small launch is between €5,000 and €15,000. This includes patterns, samples, an initial small production, labels, and basic marketing. Always build in a buffer of 20 to 30 percent for unforeseen costs.

Do I need a degree in fashion? +

No. What you need is a clear idea, the ability to provide feedback on samples, and the willingness to learn. Technical knowledge such as pattern making can be hired or outsourced. Commercial insight and perseverance cannot be.

How do I find a reliable clothing manufacturer in the Netherlands? +

Through industry organizations like Modint, through recommendations from other brands, or through direct searches. Always ask for a conversation before agreeing. A good clothing manufacturer will also ask questions. More in our article what to look for in a clothing manufacturer.

Do I need a tech pack before approaching a clothing manufacturer? +

Not necessarily. A sketch and a description are sufficient for an initial conversation. The tech pack is created after the sample is approved. At Atelier Jungles, we assist you with this through the production consultation. More in our article what is a tech pack and do you need one.

What is a realistic timeline from idea to first delivery? +

Expect at least four to six months for an initial small production, including the sample phase, corrections, and production. You can read more about the timeline for each phase in our article how long does clothing production take.

Can I start small with few pieces? +

Yes, with most Dutch clothing manufacturers. Minimum order quantities at smaller workshops often range between 20 and 50 pieces per style. This is fundamentally different from large factories abroad where minimum orders of 300 to 500 pieces are normal.

What are common mistakes made by beginners? +

Wanting too much too soon, involving the clothing manufacturer too late, underestimating how much communication production costs, and not keeping a buffer in time and budget. You can read a complete overview in our article common mistakes in clothing production.

Am I ready to start production? +

Use our checklist to assess where you stand. You can read it in our article checklist: are you ready for clothing production.
